While art-supply shopping at a Military surplus store, I came across a pair of Army-issue, quilted, cold-weather liner pants. The tender function of the garment in the context of extreme violence struck a deep empathy in me for those who had to wear it. I immediately had the vision of making a complete combat uniform (Battle Dress Uniform) that embodied this tenderness. The resulting garment is a symbolic gesture of comfort to those who fight and those who die.
